A collection of people, places and things I encounter while living in New York City for the next 5 years.

It Has Been 2 Months!

Since my last post! I can’t believe how long it took me to get internet at my NEW APARTMENT! No more roommates! I couldn’t be more excited to be living with just Ed again. Soon I will have a ‘catch-up’ post!

Labor Day Weekend

On Saturday Ed and I went to Coney Island to ride the Wonder Wheel. Next to Long Beach for the Quicksilver Pro surfing tournament. We ate at a Mexican restaurant on the beach and then headed home. Later we walked to Blockbuster and got dessert at my favorite bakery. The next day we went for an 8 mile hike in the Worthington State Forest in NJ. There were a ton of amphibians and Nerodia(water snakes).  It was a great, well needed break!

Hurricane Irene: Brooklyn

Irene has come and gone, while most people and places were unscathed, others were less fortunate. Last night, at our apartment in Brooklyn, the winds started picking up around 6:30pm with rain soaking everything. Our apartment made it through with a few leaky walls and tripped fuses, but other then that it is still standing. This afternoon Ed and I went out to assess the damage in our neighborhood. We saw fallen trees, downed power lines and businesses with their windows still boarded up with comments such as “Good night Irene” spray painted on the ply wood. We went down to the Belt Parkway which had a boulder that had been push up by the waves, crashed through a metal railing and ended up on the sidewalk. The wind was still very impressive this afternoon and is forecast to be so until later tonight. With no broken windows, the power still on and no flooding on our street I think we lucked out.

At the grocery store on Staten Island today. This was the water aisle. Preparing for hurricane Irene.

EARTHQUAKE!

So, I’m just sitting in my apartment minding my own business, then BAM! EARTHQUAKE!

Ed and I made a cake! We got the recipe from Martha Stewart, then we walked to the store and bought everything we needed. Baking the cake went great, making the meringue.. not so well. After 2 attempts and 1 trip to the store for more eggs, we decided a simple vanilla butter cream was a good idea!
